Risky Behavior, Stacey Gagnon >> Barnes Student Center, Bedford (1)
Scared kids do scary things.
When we work with children from hard places, we will often see them act out with scary or risky behaviors. If behaviors are a means of communicating a need, then it’s important that we see past the behavior to the need.
Most risky behaviors originate from the basement of the brain from survival instincts. The ACEs (adverse childhood experience) study helps us understand how childhood trauma affects us physically and mentally across the lifespan. This training will explore the psychology behind risky behaviors and discuss how to provide support.

Trauma 101, Stacey Gagnon >> Barnes Student Center, Bedford (1)
Trauma-informed teaching is not a curriculum, set of prescribed strategies, or one more thing you need to add to your busy schedule. It’s more like a lens that helps you understand your students’ behavior, which will help you build better relationships, prevent conflict, and support them effectively. If you have ever wondered about the behavioral responses you see in your students, this class will provide some insight.
Designed to help educators and church staff, this training will focus on:
• Defining developmental trauma
• The effects of trauma on the developing brain
• Understanding and applying the ACE study findings
• Understanding the effects of stress on students and how this impacts behavioral management.
• How to create and leverage relational capacity with students.
